Al Wasl introduced new head coach Hector Cuper to the media on Thursday at a press conference held at the Club’s base at the Zabeel Stadium. The Argentinian coach has signed a 1.5 year contract with the Dubai club, and brings a wealth of experience having previously managed teams including Inter Milan, Real Betis, Mallorca, Valencia and Parma. The 57-year-old told the assembled media: “I am very happy to be here at Al Wasl and I have clear goals and targets in my mind to achieve here. I thank Al Wasl for this opportunity and can assure everyone that we are going to work hard to get ourselves into a strong position.”
Cuper already has an impressive collection in his managerial trophy cabinet, having won the Spanish Supercup twice and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, and being a two-time runner-up in the UEFA Champions League, Copa del Rey, Serie A and the Greek Cup, but is under no illusions regarding the challenges he will face at Al Wasl. “Perhaps we will not be able to fight for a championship immediately, but it is my main aim to get us to a stage where we can be genuine title contenders once again,” Cuper said, adding that his love of travel means he is very excited to experience football in a new country and new culture. Board member H.E. Sultan Hareb added that H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of Al Wasl, had been instrumental in bringing a coach with the quality of Cuper to the Club, and thanked His Highness for his great support in facilitating the new managerial appointment.
