Born in Rio de Janeiro, José Mário de Almeida Barros – better known as Zé Mario – has an extensive coaching career. Assuming his first managerial position at Brazilian side Botafogo in 1982, his first experience of coaching in the Arab world came as he took charge of the Iraqi Youth National Team in 1986, before spending three years in the UAE as Head Coach of Al Ain between 1988-1991. A brief spell at Goias took him back to Brazil before he returned to the Gulf region again, this time to manage Al Arabi SC in Qatar. In 1993 he moved to Saudi club Al Riyadh, where he spent two years, before progressing to manage the Saudi National Team in 1995 and then returning to Al Riyadh a year later. Ze Mario’s next step took him to Al Sadd in Qatar, and then he took the reigns of the Qatar national team in 1998. Another stint in Saudi Arabia followed, this time at Al Ittifaq and Al Shabab, before revisiting the UAE to take charge of Al Wasl between 2006-2008. Kalba signed Ze Mario up as manager following the sacking of his predecessor Lutfi Benzarti last December.
